Heather McLeod
The first piece I ever did for radio aired on DNTO in the spring of 2000. I did three dozen more pieces for CBC in the following 18 months. Then I was made co-host of Voyage North, the drive-home show for North-Western Ontario. I moved from Montreal to Thunder Bay and put my music career (to which radio had until then played second fiddle) on the back burner.
What a great job! I was honoured to be on-air five days a week. Two of my mini-documentaries have won national radio awards. This is particularly sweet because time for such fine work was so scarce. I shared with my co-host the work of booking and scripting both live in-studio and on location interviews, pulling scripts and tape from our nationally syndicated contributors, programming the music and maintaining the music library, script and audio archiving, vetting my co-hosts work and operating. Now that my position has been cut, my co-host is doing it all alone. News that my position at CBC was cut came during my maternity leave. I’ve decided to stay home with my infant son and my creative pursuits. I feel very lucky that we can afford that.
